I want to get my cook on this year and have started by making a few basic sweets. It usually relates to what I have in the house but I am stocking up on everything so look out 2015!

I made these mini lemon meringue cupcakes a few days ago, (a first for me), gave some to the boys at work and put the rest aside to shoot the following day but I got busy, non-stop work and no natural light available when I was.

I got that chance today but with crusty meringue icing and thickened curd, they weren’t the most appetising cupcakes I had ever seen so instead, I turned the shoot into a food styling practice session.

This was in fading afternoon light, slightly back and side lit, and with the use of a reflector.
